The Ups and Downs of Life
It's important to understand that there will always be fluctuation.
Sometimes people have the impression that when they start doing inner healing, every single day will be better than the one that came before it, and that if they ever have a down moment again, something’s not working. But that’s not how this works.
We are human. There will always be fluctuations. Partly because life will always have moments when things are calm and moments when we have things to deal with. But even more so, just because emotions are naturally fluctuating. Just like the weather, they go up and down.
But think of it like the fluctuating weather when we’re moving from winter to summer. Not every single day will be warmer than the day before, but overall, we’re moving closer and closer to summer, and the overall average temperature over the course of a week or two is getting warmer.
Alternatively, I like to describe this healing journey and the state of our emotions like a healthy stock price. Over the course of a short period of time, it will go up and down, but over a longer period, it has an upward trend.
Healing only really happens when we dip down into the lower emotions and use the skills and tools we’ve learned to handle those moments properly. The moments when you’re feeling down are the moments when your body is trying to process something. Our goal is to simply not get in the way and to help our bodies turn those moments of emotional distress into moments of healing and strengthening.
Every time we accomplish that, we let go of more of what we’ve been holding onto, build the appropriate strength and resilience, and learn how not to allow a moment of feeling down to perpetuate the old cycles that turn that moment into something worse.
We want to learn how to enjoy the good moments and turn the down moments into moments of healing. If you do that, then soon, the lowest emotion you’ll feel will be equal to the highest emotion you used to feel. It takes time and commitment, but it’s worth it.
